Mayor Lanigan Announces Trail Response Team
This specially trained team, made up of members from the Rome Fire Department and Rome Police Department, will patrol the city’s recreational trail system on bicycles and utility vehicles (UTVs) throughout the summer and fall. Their mission is to ensure trail users feel safe, respond to medical incidents, and address any safety concerns as they arise.
In addition to providing a consistent and visible safety presence, the Trail Response Team will also serve as a critical outreach resource. When team members encounter unhoused individuals or new encampments along the trails, they will request support from ICAN—a trusted local partner—to connect individuals with services such as housing assistance, counseling, and other vital support programs.
“The City of Rome is committed to keeping our trails safe and welcoming for everyone,” said Mayor Lanigan. “The new Trail Response Team will not only provide a visible and reassuring presence, but also extend a helping hand to those in need. Our partnership with ICAN strengthens our outreach efforts and ensures people who want help can get it. I want to thank ICAN for their support of this initiative, and I’m deeply grateful to our Police and Fire Departments for stepping up to take on this important work. We believe this team will make a significant, positive impact for all who use our trail system.”
Public Safety Commissioner Ken White added, “At Mayor Lanigan’s direction, I’ve asked the Chiefs of the Fire and Police Departments to incorporate regular trail patrols into their operations whenever possible. These patrols—made up of two members from either or both departments—will be conducted via mountain bike or UTV and supplement officers’ and firefighters’ regular duties. I’m proud to say our public safety personnel were eager to take on this mission. My own family uses these trails often and has always felt safe—and this initiative will ensure they stay that way.”
Rome Fire Chief David Gratch confirmed the department has already been actively patrolling the Mohawk River and Canalway trails for the past two weeks and stated, “We’ve been using both bicycles and our UTV to ensure daily coverage, and the public response has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve enjoyed engaging directly with walkers and bikers along the trails and showing our continued commitment to safety and community connection.”
Rome Police Chief Kevin James echoed that sentiment, noting that the department’s Mountain Bike Unit has also stepped up its presence on the trails. He added, “Over the last week and a half, our officers have increased their focus on trail patrols to promote safety and foster positive interactions with the community. These bike patrols help us deter nuisance behavior, respond quickly to emergencies, and assist trail users directly. Our goal is not just safety—but connection.”
The Trail Response Team will prioritize high-use trail areas and remain a visible presence throughout the season. Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy Rome’s beautiful network of trails and are welcome to approach team members with any questions, concerns, or requests for assistance.
